Financial expert explains the staggering sum of money Tottenham have wasted on Tanguy Ndombele

A football financial expert has now revealed the staggering amount of money which Tottenham Hotspur spent in total on Tanguy Ndombele.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Tanguy Ndombele had departed Tottenham following the two parties mutually agreeing to terminate his contract.

Five years at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have provided very little in return for the Lilywhites having broken their transfer record on the Frenchman.

A fresh start is being promised by Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham this summer with the Australian having had a year to assess the players he inherited last summer.

It is apparent the 58-year-old is keen to offload players he does not feel have a future under him and Spurs are taking no time in doing so.

The Spurs News has spoken with TBR Football‘s financial expert Adam Williams who has provided an overview of the implications surrounding Ndombele’s recent exit.

How much Tottenham spent on Tanguy Ndombele over five years

Signing the Frenchman in 2019 from Lyon for a fee up to £63m, Spurs shattered their transfer record on the midfielder.

However, in that time, the 27-year-old was only able to rack up 91 appearances for Spurs and did not even get an opportunity under Postecoglou.

It is hardly the return of a man who cost in excess of £60m and promised to provide Tottenham’s midfield with their successor to Mousa Dembele.

Having not played in over two years for Spurs, financial expert Williams has provided an indication as to how big of a disaster this move has turned out to be for the Lilywhites.

“It’s fair to say that Ndombele’s move to Spurs has been an utter shambles for the club, both from a sporting and, perhaps more significantly, financial perspective,” he said.

“He’s earned an annual salary of £10.4m in that time, so that would have been another £52m in wages [on top of his transfer fee].

“He’s taken pay cuts during some of his loan spells, which will bring that figure down maybe by around half,” Williams added.

“But as the club will have had to pay him to cancel his contract, I still think you’re talking the best part of £100m.”

How Tanguy Ndombele’s exit may affect Tottenham with PSR

Given Ndombele has not played for Tottenham since 2021 in the Premier League, his exit has been a long time coming.

Daniel Levy has had plenty of time to accept the failure this transfer has turned out to be and Spurs will, therefore, have been able to plan ahead when it comes to the finances involved in offloading him.

Seeing Ndombele loaned out and return at the end of each spell has put the writing on the wall for Tottenham that actually selling him this summer would have been incredibly difficult and probably time consuming.

With plenty of time to consider the financial implications involved, Williams does not expect Ndombele’s contract termination to hinder Spurs in this summer’s market.

“They likely saved a chunk of his wages as a result of the termination, but they will have had to shell out the vast majority of the remaining year on his deal,” he said.

“He’s played 91 times for the club, so it’s more than £1m per match, or around £19,000 per minute he’s been on the pitch.

“In terms of their PSR situation, Spurs are sitting very comfortably, probably more so than any other team in the Premier League, especially in the big six.

“This won’t impact their budget for the summer, as I suspect this cost will have been accounted for well in advance.”
