Sheffield Wednesday target has now 'completed his medical' ahead of free transfer - journalist

A Sheffield Wednesday transfer target has now ‘completed his medical’ ahead of a free transfer to Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday got their first summer signing over the line on Friday, announcing the arrival of Ben Hamer on a free transfer.

The experienced goalkeeper becomes the first signing of the summer at Sheffield Wednesday, and manager Danny Rohl’s first permanent signing since taking charge in October.

It makes for a strong start to the pre-season, which started with owner Dejphon Chansiri agreeing a new three-year contract for Rohl.

With Hamer now official, Rohl will hope to get deals for some of his other reported transfer targets at Sheffield Wednesday over the line.

Several names are being linked with summer moves to Hillsborough. Ovie Ejaria and Karamoko Dembele are among the names mentioned, along with centre-back Charlie Goode.

Sheffield United left-back Max Lowe has also been linked; he’s set to leave the Blades as a free agent this summer, and it’s now been revealed that he’s completed a medical with the Owls.

Max Lowe completes Sheffield Wednesday medical ahead of Sheffield United exit

Lowe, 27, is being released by Sheffield United at the end of his contract on June 30th, following an injury-stricken four-year period at Bramall Lane.

Following his 2020 move from Derby County, Lowe has managed just 53 first-team appearances for Sheffield United, with eight of those coming in the Premier League last season.

But in those 53 games, Lowe has nine assists, with five of those coming in 26 Championship appearances during United’s promotion-winning 2022/23 campaign.

Posting on X, journalist Miller revealed on Friday that Lowe is now ‘set to become’ a Sheffield Wednesday player after completing his medical.

Max Lowe signing at Sheffield Wednesday suggests two things

Lowe arriving at Sheffield Wednesday may be an indication of things to come this summer, with the obvious being that the Owls will scour the free agent market.

There’s some gems to be had on the free agent market and Lowe could well be one; despite his injuries, his assists tally shows that he’s a very creative left-back, and he’ll give Marvin Johnson some good competition and cover next time round.

Lowe’s signing also shows us that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday may be ready to poach some players from neighbouring teams, regardless of rivalries.

Location can often play a decisive factor in footballer’s next moves and that may well have been the case with Lowe.

The likes of Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, and of course Sheffield United may have some good players ready to leave this summer, and Sheffield Wednesday could well find some strong signings among them.
