'For sure': Darren Ambrose says Crystal Palace should buy £20m England international to put pressure on Mateta

Former Crystal Palace star Darren Ambrose has suggested that the Eagles could sign another striker in the summer transfer window.

It comes after a remarkable season for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has started to show more of his potential in recent months.

Under Oliver Glasner, the Frenchman scored 13 goals in 13 Premier League appearances, helping guide Palace to a top-half finish.

The Crystal Palace boss implemented a fresh attacking style to the squad, which helped draw the most out of his attacking options.

With Glasner’s first full season ahead, there’s plenty of excitement surrounding how the team, and Mateta in particular, can perform.

Darren Ambrose suggests Callum Wilson to Crystal Palace transfer

Despite that impressive end to the campaign for Mateta, former midfielder Ambrose has suggested that Crystal Palace could sign Callum Wilson to compete for that centre-forward position.

It comes as reports suggest that Odsonne Edouard could leave Crystal Palace during the transfer window.

Speaking about the future of Wilson on TalkSPORT, Ambrose said: “I was thinking this when I saw the story [Wilson leaving Newcastle] come out. I really don’t know, I really don’t know.

“I think there will be suitors for sure in the Premier League. I think Crystal Palace, a team like Crystal Palace, could do with something.

“He is 32. He is not getting any younger, so the next move is probably his final move, but he may decide to go abroad.”

Should Crystal Palace sign Callum Wilson?

With such a suggestion, it begs the question of whether Crystal Palace should sign a striker like Wilson this summer.

Newcastle paid £20million for the 32-year-old back in 2020, scoring 48 goals in 108 appearances across all competitions.

It’s a record fitting for a top-level forward, though there are naturally some concerns over a deal of this sort for Palace.

The first surrounds age profile and wages, as Wilson is now entering the latter part of his career and likely could ask for a higher-end contract.

Should he start to decline, the squad may be stuck with a player they are unable to shift until the end of his deal.

There’s also a recurring injury problem for the England international, who missed 28 matches last season with five separate issues.

While there would be less importance placed on him starting every week, it could prove to be a deal worth avoiding at this stage.
